Chemical-free alternatives to hazardous household cleaning products
Between caring for multiple children, tending to your pets, and keeping your own life on track, one of the biggest challenges in today’s fast-paced, always on-the-go, modern lifestyle can be keeping your house clean and healthy. Think about all the things that fall on floors, splatter on countertops, and spill on dinner tables on a daily basis, and then consider if the products you use to clean them are doing more harm than good.
Many household cleaning brands are full of hazardous chemicals and ingredients that could potentially cause more health and environmental problems than the messes we are trying to clean. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, many of the household cleaning products we use, especially those containing ammonia, chlorine and other chemical ingredients, can cause an array of health issues like respiratory irritation, eye irritation, skin irritation, and gastrointestinal irritation if ingested. Even contact with some major products we use to keep our floors clean can cause stinging and tearing of the eyes, itching, swelling, redness, and inhaling the evaporated particles can cause coughing, sore throat, wheezing and shortness of breath. This is an especially important problem to consider for families with young children who spend ample amounts of time crawling on the floor and eating food straight from the highchair tables and countertops we often clean with these products.
On top of the numerous health concerns and risks involved with these hazardous cleaners, there are just as many negative effects on the environment. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), these chemicals are evaporated into the air we breathe and rinsed down the drain of our sinks and tubs, presenting “hazard concerns to exposed populations…or toxicity to aquatic species in waters receiving inadequately treated wastes. For example, alkylphenol ethoxylates, a common surfactant ingredient in cleaners, have been shown in laboratory studies to function as an ‘endocrine disrupter,’ causing adverse reproductive effects of the types seen in wildlife exposed to polluted waters.”
In order to avoid putting our families, our environment, and our wildlife at risk, consider switching to natural cleaning products that are just as effective, inexpensive, and way less hazardous than the chemical-filled brands that often find their way into our homes. By choosing these less hazardous products, we can reduce harmful exposure to ourselves and our children, improve indoor air quality, reduce water and ambient air pollution, and reduce packing waste – as most of these natural brands use biodegradable or recyclable material for packaging.
